15 October: Inspirationlab Future of Food

Discuss the way we feed the world in the future

Ensuring that all people have access to sufficient, affordable, safe and nutritious food is a key challenge for our society. The United Nations estimates that global food production levels will need to increase 70 percent by 2050 to help feed 10 billion people. In September 2015, the international community approved the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the aim to tackle this challenge: "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture".

This calls for a major effort on the part of policy-makers, global leaders, farmers and civil society throughout the world. It is a challenge that is both highly politically relevant and an appealing ‘business case’ for the Netherlands, which has a cutting edge track record in agri-food innovation. Besides, and Dutch institutions and businesses are well-positioned to make a substantial contribution in increasing food production without exhausting land and resources.


Speakers

Speakers Dr. Jessica Kiefte-de Jong and Dr. Niels Louwaars share their visions on the future of food.

Dr. Kiefte-de Jong will address the role of nutrition and lifestyle and the risk of chronic diseases in different stages of life from her perspective as Assistant Professor in Global Public Health.

Dr. Louwaars will share this point of view as director of Plantum. He specialized in policy research dealing with regulatory issues related to seeds and plant genetic resources.
